Itineraries

One day in Kaohsiung

Light rail along the water, a ferry to the island, and a boat on the river at dusk.

Spend the day on the harbor. Ride the light rail north along the water from Asia New Bay, stop at the Music Center and Pier-2, cross to Cijin by ferry for seafood and the lighthouse, and finish with the Love Boat in the evening. It works any day of the week, but Pier-2 stays open later from Friday to Sunday.

Morning: Asia New Bay

Start at the light rail's Kaohsiung Exhibition Center stop (C8) and the Main Public Library (closed Mondays, opens 10:00). Ride three stops to Love Pier (C11) for the Kaohsiung Music Center's waterfront.

Late morning: Pier-2

One stop on to Dayi Pier-2 (C12). Wander the warehouses, galleries and shops from 10:00. The Great Harbor Bridge here swings open at 15:00 every day (and 19:00 at weekends), so if you're passing then, stop and watch.

Lunch and afternoon: Cijin

Ride to Hamasen (C14), walk to Gushan Ferry Pier and take the ferry to Cijin (NT$30). Eat seafood on Miaoqian Road by the pier, visit the Tianhou Temple, then walk up to the Kaohsiung Lighthouse (open to 21:00) and Cihou Fort for the view back over the harbor mouth.

Late afternoon: Hamasen

Ferry back. Look round the Takao Railway Museum (closed Mondays) and, if you have energy, take a taxi up to the British Consulate at Takow (closed Wednesdays, last entry 18:30).

Evening: the Love River

Take the Orange Line from Hamasen (O1) two stops to Cianjin (O4) and walk to the Love Boat pier opposite the Ambassador Hotel: 25 minutes on the river, NT$150, from 15:00 to 22:00. Then Liuhe Night Market is one more stop to Formosa Boulevard (O5).
