Sizihwan and the sunset spots

Kaohsiung faces west over the sea. Here's where to be at sundown.

Kaohsiung faces west over the Taiwan Strait, so the sunsets are big. The classic spot is Sizihwan (西子灣), whose sunset is one of the city's Eight Views of Kaohsiung. For height, watch from the British Consulate's hill, a wartime bunker deck at Shaochuantou, or the Lovers' Observatory on Shoushan.

  • Sizihwan (西子灣), 51 Lianhai Rd., about 1.3 km from Hamasen Station, by National Sun Yat-sen University. The university's beach gate is for its own staff and students only, with no swimming.
  • The British Consulate at Takow, on the hill above: the veranda looks straight out over the harbor mouth. Last entry is 18:30. → The consulate
  • The Shaochuantou bunker deck: a Second World War machine-gun bunker with a small viewing deck for about 40 people, on a footpath off Lane 30, Anchuan St., along the consulate trail.
  • Shoushan Lovers' Observatory (壽山情人觀景台), next to the Martyrs' Shrine at 30 Zhongyi Rd. on Shoushan: a viewing deck with "declaration of love" plaques and macaque statues. → Shoushan
  • Cijin, across the water: the beach faces the same sunset. → Cijin

→ The harbor

Questions

Where is the best place to watch the sunset in Kaohsiung?

Sizihwan: its sunset is one of the city's Eight Views of Kaohsiung. The British Consulate's hilltop and Shoushan's Lovers' Observatory look over the same sea.

Can I swim at Sizihwan?

Not from the university's beach gate: it's for NSYSU staff and students only, with no swimming or water sports. Swim at Cijin Beach (April to October) instead.
