What to eat in Kaohsiung

A port city's seafood, the goat and noodles of the towns around it, and a glass of something with milk in it.

Eat seafood on Cijin, a bowl of braised pork rice in town, goat in Gangshan and Hakka rice noodles in Meinong, and wash it down with black tea milk or papaya milk. Kaohsiung's food comes from the harbor and from the farm towns of the wider city, and the 2026 MICHELIN Guide lists 21 Bib Gourmand spots here, most of them small, cheap and decades old.

Seafood on Cijin

The island across the harbor mouth is where Kaohsiung goes for seafood. The Taiwan Tourism Administration describes Cijin's old street as lined with restaurants selling fresh, budget-friendly seafood, many of them clustered along Miaoqian Road by the ferry pier and around the beach. Take the ferry from Gushan Ferry Pier in Hamasen (NT$30) and walk straight off the boat into it.

Braised pork rice

Goat in Gangshan

Gangshan, at the northern end of the Red Line, is famous for goat, and the city tourism office calls its goat hot pot a local delicacy. The MICHELIN Bib Gourmand pick is Joes (舊市羊肉), open since 1955: a stock of goat bones and Chinese herbs, and stir-fried goat with bitter melon.

  • Address 111 Hehua Rd., Gangshan District
  • Station MRT Gangshan Station (RK1, Red Line), then a taxi

Hakka rice noodles in Meinong

Meinong, a Hakka town in the hills northeast of the city, is known above all for its flat rice noodles (粄條, ban tiao) and pig knuckles: the district office calls them its most famous dishes. Ban tiao are cut from a steamed sheet of rice batter and served in soup or stir-fried. They're the reason to make Meinong a day trip. → Meinong and Qishan

Gua bao

A soft steamed bun folded around braised pork. Chun Lan Gua Bao (春蘭割包), at 5 Fuxing 1st Rd. in Xinxing since 2000, is on the 2026 Bib Gourmand list. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 19:00; cash only.

Black tea milk

A Kaohsiung classic: black tea mixed with fresh milk. Laojiang (老江紅茶牛奶) at 51 Nantai Rd. in Xinxing District has made it since 1953: four blended teas, local fresh milk, and no ice. Its ham and egg toast is a breakfast classic. The city even has a milk tea festival, held in Yancheng in September.

Papaya milk

Papaya blended with milk. The city's agriculture bureau calls the "well-known papaya milk of Kaohsiung" a national favourite. The papayas come from Meinong, Qishan, Shanlin and Liouguei, and you'll find papaya milk at most night markets.

Milkfish

A silvery, bony fish farmed in ponds along the coast. The city government names Mituo, on the coast north of the centre, as home to the best milkfish farms and a milkfish festival. Look for milkfish belly soup or milkfish balls.

A traditional breakfast

Kaohsiung mornings start early. Xinglongju (興隆居) on Liuhe 2nd Rd. in Qianjin has served soup dumplings and baked flatbread (shaobing) since 1954 and opens before dawn; it opens Wednesday to Sunday from 04:30. → Breakfast

Vegetarian

The Borage, one of the new MICHELIN Selected entries for 2026, serves a four-course vegan set menu, Thursday to Sunday evenings, from stall B27 in the restored Yancheng First Public Retail Market (鹽埕第一公有零售市場), 141-7 Lainan St. Out of town, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum in Dashu serves only vegetarian food, from a buffet to its Waterdrop Teahouses.
